July 31st, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

Yahoo.com has posted results from the June 29th Profiles in History auction, which included film memorabilia from motion pictures as The Empire Strikes Back, The Terminator, Alien, Temple of Doom and Last Crusade.  The highlight at the auction for us Indy fans was the leather jacket from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, which was the third highest selling item in the lot.

Original estimated price for the jacket was $40,000 - $50,000, but Indy's jacket from the third Indiana Jones film sold for an impressive $94,400.  Other items from the Hollywood Memorabilia auction, which included props from the personal collection of Gary Kurtz, included Luke Skywalker's light saber from Star Wars, which sold for $200,600 and Darth Vader's lightsaber from Star Wars, selling for $118,000.

An impressive price for such a fine leather jacket.  Check out Yahoo.com to view the rest of the highlights from the auction.

Sean Connery Ends Acting Career for Good
July 31st, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

One of the greatest actors of all time - the original James Bond and dear ol' dad to the greatest swashbuckling archaeologist of all time - Sir Sean Connery, is officially calling it quits.  Scotland on Sunday reports that Sir Sean has ended his acting career (one that spanned over five decades) with Connery commenting, "I'm fed up with the idiots ... the ever-widening gap between people who know how to make movies and the people who green-light the movies.  I don't say they're all idiots. I'm just saying there's a lot of them that are very good at it [being idiots]."

Connery went on to say that "It would almost need a Mafia-like offer I couldn't refuse to do another movie."

Steven Spielberg once said, "There are only seven genuine movie stars in the world today, and Sean is one of them."  I could not agree more.  Connery's contributions to film over the years will be loved and remembered for years to come.  So if Connery really is through with his career, it looks as though he won't be returning as Professor Henry Jones Sr. in Indiana Jones 4 as many fans had hoped.  Then again, if anyone can do it, I'm sure that Spielberg could work up an offer Connery couldn't refuse.

So if it is all over with, we at The Indy Experience.com would like to say thank you, Sir Connery for all of your work over the years - hats off.

July 29th, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

We've just updated the Indiana Jones Fan Art Gallery with a wonderful collection of sketch work by Karen Hinson and a tattoo from Bret Mosley.

Here is the collection of four Indiana Jones sketches by Karen Hinson:

And this is the tattoo from Bret Mosley:

The Indiana Jones tattoo has an interesting story along with it.  It was was done by Jerry for Bret Mosley in San Francisco 12 years ago.  When Bret met John Rhys-Davies at the opening of the Temple of the Forbidden Eye ride in Disneyland California, Davies laughed and said, "That's gawn a little bit too faw!"

Big thanks to Karen and Bret for allowing us to host their artwork!

Director Tim Story Explains How Raiders Inspired Him
July 29th, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

Telegraph.co.uk spoke with Fantastic Four director Tim Story, who explained his admiration for Steven Spielberg's work and how he has been so inspired by Raiders of the Lost Ark.  Here's a quick excerpt from the interview:

"I'll be very straightforward," says a refreshingly candid Tim Story. "I steal a lot from Spielberg. It's not because he's this blockbuster guy: the reason is that he has such an instinct for storytelling. And, though it's complicated, it always seems so unplanned."

If you're going to steal from someone, you might as well steal from the best.  Story then went out to examine the different aspects of Raiders and how they have inspired and motivated him in becoming a director.

Overall, Story makes some perceptive observations in his analysis of Raiders that I believe most fans can agree with.  It's hard to find a director under the age of 35 who hasn't been inspired by Steven Spielberg.  Check out Telegraph.co.uk to read the full interview.

Ford Determined to Do Own Stunts in Indy 4
July 25th, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

Harrison Ford spoke with Saga Magazine about his personal life and whether or not the 63-year-old actor has been going through a mid-life crisis.  Ford stated in the interview that he is determined to do his own stunts in Indiana Jones 4, "I have picked up plenty of bumps, bruises and cuts over the years.  I have injured a shoulder and torn a hamstring - that sort of thing.  But I have got so used to taking a battering, on screen as in life, that I feel anything is possible,"

Isn't it wonderful to hear this coming from Ford himself?  Even with all of the criticism in the past about Ford being too old to play Indiana Jones for a fourth time, Harrison still has faith in himself.  The phrase, "built Ford tough" certainly goes a long way when describing this star, hats off Mr. Ford!

Check out The Mail Online to read more of the interview.

Profiles in History Now Accepting Bids on Indy Items
July 22nd, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

Profiles in History is now accepting absentee bids for their Hollywood Memorabilia auction on eBay Live Auctions.  The auction is set to take place on July 29th, but buyers can place an absentee bid with eBay.  As we've reported earlier this month, the auction includes three props from the Indiana Jones films; a collection of Thuggee whips from Temple of Doom, a machete from Temple of Doom, and Indy's leather jacket from Last Crusade.

Lot #241. Harrison Ford signature brown leather jacket from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. (Paramount, 1989) Studio-distressed brown high-quality leather jacket with zipper front closure, lined in light brown cotton.  Internal Bermans & Nathans label is handwritten "Indy III 3402 Ford".  This jacket was originally acquired from Bermans & Nathans.  Worn by Harrison Ford in perhaps his most famous role - as the sleuthing archaeologist Indiana Jones - this jacket spawned a fashion craze during the 1980s, and is arguably one of the most recognizable leather jackets ever filmed for the silver screen!  Starting bid is $40,000, with an estimated selling price of $40,000 - $50,000.

Lot #242. Prop machete from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. (Paramount, 1984) This prop machete was used in the film just prior to the famous Rope Bridge sequence, with rope hoop around the handle and silver reflective tape on the blade.  The shape and style of this machete perfectly matches one wielded by a Thuggee who confronts Indy just before he crosses the Rope Bridge.  Several variations of machete were used for this sequence, all of which are easy to identify on-screen.  In fact, there is a major continuity error in this scene: Indy whips a machete from the hand of one Thuggee, and it flies off into the distance.  In the next shot, we see Indy holding what is supposed to be the very same machete!  Originally acquired from the film's property master, this is one of the most important and identifiable machetes from the trilogy to have survived.  Starting bid is $3,000, with an estimated selling price of $3,000 - $4,000

Lot #243. Collection of three Thuggie whips from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. (Paramount, 1984) This group of three distinctive styles of whip, intended for use by the Thuggies, consists of a short 'cat-of-nine-tails', a black whip with red tasseled end and an elaborate long handled whip with 'platted' three 'tails'. The black whip has snapped at the handle, otherwise all are in fine condition.  The long handled whip is strikingly similar to the 'hero' Giant Thuggie Whip, featured prominently in the film. Originally acquired from the film's prop master.  Starting bid is $1,000, with an estimated selling price of $1,000 - $1,500.

Young Indy DVD Release to Coincide with Indy 4
July 19th, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

The Digital Bit's "My Two Cents" column reported on the progress that has been made on the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles DVDs and the possible release date timeline for the box set:

"Two years of work has already been completed on an eventual DVD box set of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles: The Complete Series, but it likely will not be released until the eventual theatrical or DVD debut of Indiana Jones 4."

Indy fans have been waiting a lot time for the Young Indy DVD box set, and it is certainly encouraging to see that Lucasfilm has invested so much time and effort in a complete box set series.  With Indiana Jones 4, the next-gen Indy game and the Young Indiana Jones DVDs; 2007 is looking to be a very exciting year for Indiana Jones!  Stay tuned for the latest.

Even More Talk About the Next-Gen Indiana Jones Game
July 19th, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

LucasArts was in attendance at the Electronic Entertainment Expo where they unveiled two new Star Wars games.  Vice-president of LucasArts, Peter Hirschman, spoke with @Play about the next Indiana Jones video game.  He spoke about the tie-ins with Indiana Jones 4 and how the game will fit into the Indiana Jones timeline.  Very encouraging quotes, here's an excerpt from the interview posted by Globletechnology:

A long those lines, you've announced a new Indiana Jones games. Does that mean the game will tie in with the long-awaited new Indiana Jones film?

Indiana Jones. Has there ever been a better character suited to video games? I don't think so.

Indy and the Indy games are things we're really excited about internally, and it's great to see the reception the announcement's gotten here at the show. It's really gratifying, actually. Our plan for the Indy game is to be out in 2007 on next-gen consoles. The plan for the movie is to also come out in 2007, pending script approval. I wish I could give you an exclusive here, but everything you've read is true: they're waiting to find just the right script. Indy is such a special character, and his movies are held in such high regard that I think George and Steven [Spielberg] and everyone involved only want to move forward if it's something truly worth doing. That said, they're shooting for a 2007 theatrical release.

Our game is going to be tied into the movie in the sense that we'll have locations, scenes and characters that foreshadow events in the movie. But the movie is going to be taking place chronologically in a later time frame. We're doing an Indy adventure in the classic Raiders timeframe of the late 30s. The Nazis are the bad guys, there's a race against evil to get something that has the potential to change the course of humankind. So we'll have a great tie-in to the film, but it will be a brand new unique Indy adventure. And again, that great combination of being able to go see the film, be excited and enjoy that Indy experience, and then go home and be able to play in the Indy universe, go on their adventure and shape Indy's destiny with their own hands.

Sounds like a good old fashioned Indiana Jones adventure, just what we need!  It's thrilling to hear the enthusiasm from LucasArts, and with all that we've been hearing, this Indy game looks to have excellent potential.  Stay tuned to The Indy Experience.com for the latest!

Thanks to Eddie for the news!

Photos from the Adaptation Screening in Mississippi
July 17th, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

GCWriters.org has posted photos from the Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation screening in Mississippi on July 7th.  The photos are of the Indiana Jones costume contest that was held after the screening.  The first place winner in the Indiana Jones costume contest was 6-year-old Dominic Sellers (left), reports The Sun HeraldAdaptation creators Chris Strompolos and Eric Zala were in attendance for the screening and for a question and answer session afterwards.  Chris Strompolos commented on the Indy costume winner, saying that "He looks better than I did.  Now, Dominic wants to make a movie."

The screening and costume contest were topped off with a raffle for a real Indiana Jones fedora, which was won by David Delk of Gulfport.  The Gulf Coast Writers Association provided Gummi snakes, centipedes and tarantulas to the audience.  Biloxi's Silver Screen theater was completely sold out, making this one very successful Adaptation screening.  For more information, check out GCWriters.org and The Sun Herald.

More Indy Gaming Talk from Jim Ward!
July 16th, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

The Hollywood Reporter's Paul "The Game Master" Hyman spoke with LucasArts president Jim Ward about the highly anticipated next-generation Indiana Jones video game due out sometime in 2007.  Mr. Ward had some very encouraging things to say about the new Indy game, for instance, how does an Indy game every year sound?  Here's an excerpt from THR:

"We've done 'Indiana Jones' games in the past -- on and off -- but it hasn't necessarily been a concerted effort," Ward says. "In my opinion, there's no reason why we shouldn't turn it into a franchise and have an Indy game every year.

"Many people think of LucasArts as being the 'Star Wars' company, and traditionally, I suppose, that's been our heaviest SKU," he adds. "However, the plan is absolutely to broaden our interactive gaming sphere with our 'Indiana Jones' IP, and with a number of new intellectual properties, most notably 'Mercenaries,' which we launched in January and which is becoming a brand new franchise for us."

And what does George Lucas have to say regarding the content of all these new creations?

"George will tell you that he's no hardcore gamer," notes Ward. "And he's not one to say, hey, this is exactly what such-and-such a game needs. But when you need to talk to someone about story and character development, particularly when it comes to 'Star Wars' and 'Indiana Jones' -- he's not a bad guy to go to."

Does this mean that Uncle George will have a hand in the story development of the next Indy game?  No one can say for sure, but it certainly would make sense.  It's good to see LucasArts pushing to make more Indiana Jones games, since there is certainly an almost endless array of stories that can be used.  And a new Indy game every year would certainly keep us on our toes.

Stay tuned to The Indy Experience.com for the latest on the next-gen Indiana Jones video game!  And be sure to check out the full The Hollywood Reporter article, it's definitely worth a read.

Big thanks to Eddie for the heads up!

Kurtz Auction to Include Temple of Doom Sword & Whips
July 10th, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

We've got another update on the Gary Kurtz movie memorabilia auction by Profiles in History.  Not only will the auction include Indy's leather jacket from Last Crusade, it will also include a sword and a collection of Thuggee whips from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

According to the online catalog from Profiles in History, the auction will include a prop Machete from Temple of Doom:

This prop machete was used in the film just prior to the famous Rope Bridge sequence, with rope hoop around the handle and silver reflective tape on the blade. Photos of the Last Crusade Jacket Up for Auction
July 9th, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

We've just received a collection of photographs of the Last Crusade leather jacket that is to be auctioned by Profiles in History.  As you may have read earlier this week, Profiles in History will be auctioning off memorabilia from the archives of filmmaker Gary Kurtz on July 29th.  Included in the collection is one of the leather jackets worn by Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, which comes from another private collector.  Just to clarify, the jacket is not from the collection of Gary Kurtz, but from another collector.  Brian Chanes from Profiles in History was kind enough to send TIE.c eleven photos of the actual jacket that is to be auctioned:

It certainly is a fine leather jacket.  The jacket is expected to sell at an estimated $40,000 - $50,000.  Visit profilesinhistory.com to learn more.

Special thanks to Brian Chanes for the photos!

Kathleen Kennedy Gives an Indy 4 Progress Report
July 7th, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

Producer Kathleen Kennedy spoke with Now Playing Magazine about the next installment of Indiana Jones where she gave a very encouraging progress report on Indy 4.  Here's a quick summary of the interview from Now Playing Magazine with Kennedy:

In the interview, Kennedy stated that "We're working on a screenplay.  I know this sounds like something that we've been saying for 15 years, but I'm hoping that we're going to see something in a couple of months.  Jeff Nathanson is working on the script right now...  I will say this: If it comes in and we're all happy with it, it will be more than likely the next thing we do."

According to Now Playing Magazine, Kennedy stated that earlier reports that Nathanson's draft had been "approved" by Lucas and Spielberg were indeed true, but that didn't mean what we thought it did. "It's one thing to approve something, it's another thing to say it's greenlit and we're shooting it.  So we're just in that sort of phase of finessing,"

When asked if she thought Ford was too old to play Indy, Kennedy responded, "No, I don't think so.  Certainly we're not writing the script as though he's 20 years old.  You know, Sean Connery spent a lot of time in the Bond role and whatnot.  I think it's great that we can go make another Indiana Jones movie and Indy can be a little older.  I think playing with that is a good thing."

Now Playing Magazine then asked if Indy 4 would take place in the 1950s, and Kennedy stated, "Ahhhh, yeah.  The late '40s."  An earlier timeline?  According to Kathleen, that seems to be the case.  She was then asked who the new bad guys were going to be, "I'm not going to tell you the story!" she laughs.  "What do you think, I'm nuts?!  You'll be here next year and ask me if I'm working on the Indy movie.  'No, I got fired!'"

This is very reassuring news.  According to several previous reports, we're expecting to see an Indiana Jones 4 draft from Nathanson in the hands of The Big Three within two months, and with a little luck we'll have script approval shortly thereafter.  Things are looking very good for Indy 4, so stay tuned to TIE.c for the latest!

And be sure to read Now Playing's interview with Kathleen Kennedy - it's well worth a read.

Big thanks to Scott Collura for the news!

Raiders: The Adaptation Screening Tonight in Mississippi!
July 7th, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

Seven is the magic number, remember that.  The Gulf Coast Writers Association is hosting a special screening of Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation TONIGHT (July 7th) at 7:00PM for $7 at the Silver Screen in Edgewater Village Shopping Center in Biloxi, Mississippi!

The Adaptation event will include, in addition to the screening, an Indiana Jones costume contest for kids (so be sure to wear your Indy Gear) and a question and answer session with two of the Adaptation's creators, Chris Strompolos and Eric Zala.

Chris Strompolos commented on the progress of the Backyard Resistance film about their remake of Raiders, "Backyard Resistance is the working title, though it's not going to stick.  It's moving along really, really well.  I know that the Rudin folks are happy with its progress.  And this month, actually, Eric and Jayson and I are flying up to Oakland, Calfornia to see (screenplay writer) Daniel (Clowes) again.  Spend some time with him to solidify some details."

Again, tickets for the Adaptation screening are $7 and kids under 7 get in free.  The reason for the theme of "7" is because it took Chris, Eric and Jayson seven years to remake Raiders of the Lost Ark (from 1982 - 1989).  Proceeds from the screening will go to benefit the GCWA.

For more information on the Adaptation screening, visit The Sun Herald and GCWA.org

This year's free concert will feature the finest moments of John Williams, a composer synonymous with the most glittering and heroic music ever to be produced for the silver screen."

Though the site does not state whether or not the music from Raiders of the Lost Ark will be played, it's hard to imagine a concert with the music of John Williams without the Raiders March.

The concert will be held at Canada Square Park in London on Friday, July 15th at 7:30PM.  Tommy Pearson is the presenter and François-Xavier Roth is the conductor.
